Once you have Medicare Part B, you can take advantage of “Welcome to Medicare” preventive visit within the first 12 months of becoming a beneficiary. It is helpful to take this preventive visits so that you will have a full review of your medical and social history related to your health as well as receive education and counselling about preventive measures and services that you can take. The services include:
- Certain screenings, shots, and referrals for other care, if needed
- Height, weight, and blood pressure measurements
- A calculation of your body mass index
- A simple vision test
- A review of your potential risk for depression and your level of safety
- An offer to talk with you about creating advance directives.
- A written plan letting you know which screenings, shots, and other preventive services you need.
On the other hand, if you have your Medicare part B for longer than 12 months, you can take advantage of yearly wellness visits. The importance of taking this visit is to develop or update your personalized prevention plan. The plan that you’ll have in taking this yearly wellness visits will help take necessary steps to prevent disease and disability based on your current health risk factors.
Note: Your doctor or healthcare provider might prescribe additional services that are more than what Medicare covers. You may have to pay some or all of those additional services. If you have Medicare Supplement plans, those additional out-of-pocket health care expenses can be minimized or covered.
